Rules and Regulations 2021

The following rules apply for SONIC dance competitions.

Registration

SONIC is open to all dance studios and schools as well as individuals (the studio fee applies to groups and individuals alike). Professionals (teachers, performers etc.) whose main income source is dance are only allowed to compete in the teacher category.

The competition will be done in one round, no pre-qualification.

Age categories:
Mini: up to 9 years
Children: 10 – 12
Junior: 13 – 16
Senior: 17 – 25
Senior Para/Special: no limit
Teachers: no age limit
 
Ages are calculated as of January 1 of the current year. For D/T/Q and groups, ages are averaged and the decimal is dropped (example: a group with the average age of 12.6 will be competing in the Children age group). Please carry proof of age for all dancers in case of inquiry.

Solo: 1 dancer
Duo/Trio/Quartet: 2-4 dancers
Group: 5-10 dancers
Formation: 11+ dancers

Soloists can only compete once per category (example: the same dancer can compete a jazz and a contemporary solo, but not two jazz solos). There is no limit of solos per dancer.
 
Time limits*:
Solo & D/T/Q: up to 2:00
Group & Formation: 2:00 – 3:30
*Song & Dance + 30 seconds
No time limits for special & para dance
 
Copyright infringement:
Studios need to have the rights to any presented choreography and be able to provide written evidence in case of inquiry. Any stolen (copied off of youtube/instagram/etc.) choreography will be immediately disqualified. The only exception is made for classical ballet variations.
 
Props:
Any prop needs to be set up by the dancers themselves (Minis can have help from teachers). Time limit for set up and take down of props: 15 seconds. Live animals, fluids (soap bubbles, paint, etc.), pyrotechnics and realistic looking prop weapons are strictly prohibited.
 
Acrobatic tricks:
Any dance with more than 3 acrobatic passes/tricks needs to be registered in Acro or Open.
 
Deadlines:

Registration ends 30 days before the event. Entries are limited. Changes in upload of music or registered dances after the deadline are possible, but are charged a handling fee of 30€.

Awards:

1st, 2nd and 3rd place are awarded in all categories. The highest scoring dances in each age group will receive 150€, the studio/school with the highest average scores will receive a special award. There will also be an award for best choreography.

Technique: 50%
Choreography: 20%
Level of difficulty: 15%
Overall impression: 15%

Competition etiquette:

When backstage, please keep quiet as to not distract the dancers currently on stage. Teachers are not permitted to give clues to dancers on stage or dance along in the wings. Keep wings clear for formation changes and quick changes. Only one teacher is permitted backstage with any dancer/group.

Important:

No offensive or explicit language in music! Please use age appropriate costumes and choreography. All judging decisions are final.
